  • Rok:Brgr

5800 SW 73rd St., South Miami Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-663-6099

Rok:Brgr is South Miamian's place for quality burgers with a 1920s Chicago post-Prohibition vibe. The dining room is decorated with exposed brick and Edison lights for charm, and an oversize patio is perfect for people-watching on weekend evenings. Go for an Angus beef patty, topped with yellow American cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickle on a sesame seed bun. A prime burger adds Vermont cheddar, hickory-smoked bacon, and bourbon-infused barbecue sauce to the Angus beef. If you're not into red meat, try the lobster corn dog. Wash it all down with your choice of over 60 beers and 45 bourbons.Read our full review.

  • Sports Grill

1559 Sunset Dr. Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-668-0396

Sports bars should be simple - tasty bar food, cold brews, plenty of TVs. Local chain Sports Grill has this formula down pat, and their South Miami outpost is no exception. Add a nice mix of craft brews to the mix, and arguably Miami's best wings (get 'em grilled) and you've got a winning home for Heat games, Fins action and Canes pride.

Does a Philly cheesesteak sandwich â?? thinly sliced rib eye, grilled onions, and Cheez Whiz on an Amoroso roll imported from Philadelphia â?? taste better at 3 in the morning than at any other time? No. It tastes better at 3 in the morning because you are eating it at the Alibi, a food concession within funky SoBe hangout bar Lost Weekend. It tastes better because co-owner Bill Sisca is from Philadelphia and partner John Ross is a CIA-trained chef. Two more reasons: It costs just $8.95, and you are eating it with a side of the freshly made crinkle-cut fries ($4.95) with an available side ($1 extra) such as chipotle or truffle oil or more of that Cheez Whiz (can you really ever have too much?). Plus you are getting a taste of your mate's shrimp poboy sandwich. It tastes better at 3 in the morning because you are keeping the night alive by ordering drinks from the bar while you goof around at the pool table and you are already thinking of capping off your late-night Dagwood-inspired binge with one of John's girlfriend Kristie's now-famous strawberry shortcake cupcakes â?? another house specialty â?? and of course you'll buy a second cupcake because (A) they're so good and (B) it's one for $3 but two for $5,and you'll wonder if it wouldn't make sense if you took a bacon-chicken Philly or an all-beef hot dog to go (only five bucks!), because at that point, it'll be around 5 in the morning (closing time at the Alibi), and breakfast will be, let's face it, just around the corner.

  • Arnold's Royal Castle

12490 NW 7th Ave. North Miami

    305-696-8241

Those big, juicy, rare half-pound sirloin burgers just won't do the trick when you're jonesing for some sliders. Miami has no White Castles (even the southern chain Crystal has only made it as far south as Broward County), but who needs em when we've got the last surviving Royal Castle? Now independently run, the 24/7 dinerette serves a variety of items including fried chicken with thin, crispy batter; belly busting breakfasts featuring three-egg omelets, smoked sausages, grits, hash browns, fried catfish fillets, and authentic country ham; even vegetarian burgers for those who must. But the two-bite beef burgers, cooked when you order them (not steamtabled) in darned good grease are the piece de resistance. With cheese or without, they're cheaper by the six pack -- and nobody can eat just one of these succulent, sautéed, onion-topped, square patties. To wash it down: the Castle's signature birch beer, served in a frosted mug just like in the Forties.

  • Bird Bowl

    9275 Bird Rd. Central Dade

    305-221-1221

Before cell phones and the Internet, there was Bird Bowl. This old-fashioned, Big Lebowski-style bowling alley has been open for 52 years. Besides the lanes, there's a billiard room with 18 newly re-covered tables, an arcade with tons of videogames, and a lounge area with nightly drink specials. Next to the lounge is Perky's Pizza, which serves piping-hot slices.

  • Bulldog Barbecue & Burger

15400 Biscayne Blvd. Aventura/North Miami Beach

    305-940-9655

The sharp-tongued Howie Kleinberg might be Miami's most successful Top Chef alum. Following his love-him-or-hate-him appearance on the grueling reality show, Kleinberg returned to his home turf — North Miami — to feed his people the food he loves. That means hulking platters of pulled pork and beef brisket, along with classic sides such as burnt-end-studded beans and fried pickles. In 2011, he added a burger operation to his already-successful barbecue joint, making his Biscayne Boulevard spot a bona fide meat lover's paradise. If you're looking for something lighter, go for the smokehouse wings, with a simple, subtle smoke flavor and just the right amount of heat. It's perfect for the fickle eater and nothing some extra hot sauce won't fix for fire-eaters.Read our full review.

  • Burger & Beer Joint

    900 S. Miami Ave., Ste. 130 Brickell

    305-523-2244

This sister location to the South Beach Burger & Beer Joint has the same rock & roll attitude. It's a sports bar, lounge, and restaurant. This should come as no surprise, because it is the creation of Automatic Slims' owner and a former general manager of SushiSamba. If you look at the 99 beer varieties and numerous unique burger options, you'll be salivating for the happy hour specials. The sports bar is open Monday to Friday from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. and from noon until 5 a.m. on weekends.

  • Burger & Beer Joint

1766 Bay Rd., Miami Beach South Beach

    305-672-3287

This South Beach hangout has more attitude than a Hell's Angel. OK, perhaps that's pushing it a little, but it's a sports bar, lounge, and restaurant that is definitely more than just a tatted-up Mickey D's. (This should come as no surprise, because it is the creation of Automatic Slims' conceptual owner and a former GM from SushiSamba.) An upstairs lounge, open 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and now Mondays for poker, is a great getaway for locals who love to rock, especially when bands perform. It boasts eight TV sets, green chalkboard walls, an oval bar, and a purple-cloth pool table. B&B's sports bar is where you can also find folks drinkin' and smokin' from happy hour on. With 99 types of beer, an incredible wine list, a full bar, and a cocktail menu with selections named "Harry Palmer," "Lowrider," and "Daisy Duke," you can bet patrons stay until the wee hours. But the focal point is the restaurant, where carnivores can customize a burger with a choice of a half- or full pound of free-range beef, Kobe, or turkey; four buns; eight types of cheese; grilled toppings; a selection of unique sauces (we're partial to the Atomic horseradish, tarragon rémoulade, and chipotle ketchup); raw veggies; and "Pure Platinum" toppings such as foie gras and truffle demi. Whatever you partake of, throw the thoughts of keeping kosher out the window and pair your beef with a deep-fried Twinkie and an adult milkshake (we love the "O Face" and "Money Shot"), made with Edy's ice cream right from the case. Even the kiddies will get a kick out of this joint, especially because they get their own menu and crayons with which to deface the tabletops. Hell, if you're feeling rebellious, pick up a Crayola too.Read our full review.

  • BurgerFi

    4343 N. Ocean Dr., Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Beaches

    954-489-0110

Communal tables in bright green and natural wood host a family of multicolored chairs. Naked bulbs offer warm light from a planked ceiling. It's like a dining hall at summer camp -- but more stylish. Try the Burger Fi burger (with two angus patties, lettuce, tomato, and Burger Fi sauce) or the New York Style Dog (topped with deli mustard and sauerkraut). The ½ + 1/2 Burger is an angus patty topped with american cheese, quinoa burger, white cheddar, lettuce, tomato and BurgerFi sauce. Alternative Style Fries come smothered with grilled diced onions, American cheese, and BurgerFi sauce. This burger shop also offers a range of vegetarian and red-meat-free options, and donâ??t forget to try a concrete -- a frozen custard with toppings like M&Ms or fresh fruit.

  • The Butcher Shop

    14235 S. Dixie Highway Cutler Bay/Palmetto Bay

    305-253-9525

The Butcher Shop serves one of Miami-Dade's best pan con lechón sandwiches, served on Cuban rolls baked daily. They create a sandwich that, when pressed, crisps into an impossibly thin crust, akin in texture to the Indian lentil crackers called papadum. The interior holds its juice, propped up by a shot of doctored mojo sauce called "mojito," which is also available in a squirt bottle on the counter where customers sit.

  • Cheeseburger Baby

1505 Washington Ave., Miami Beach South Beach

    305-531-7300

Cheeseburger Baby’s current owner, Stephanie Vitori, started as a delivery driver at the restaurant, before taking over almost two decades ago. The little burger joint, located on Washington Avenue in South Beach, gained worldwide fame after Jay-Z and Beyoncé were spotted enjoying a few sandwiches after hours. The restaurant’s motto is simple: Serve great burgers to people into the wee hours of the morning, at reasonable prices. The burgers are fresh off the griddle, the beer is cold, and the service is friendly.

  • Coney Burger

2298 SW Eighth St. Little Havana

    786-523-2722

Coney Burger's ascent from Smorgasburg pop-up in Wynwood to Calle Ocho brick-and-mortar establishment is a testament to the love that power couple Pedro (chef) and Vanessa (marketing) Lara pour into the venture. Carnivores should order the "Champ," a beyond-juicy Wagyu patty procured from a family-run ranch in Homestead, seared to perfection and topped with a slice of tarragon-seasoned, pickled green heirloom tomato, a schmear of the chef's egg yolk-based "happy sauce," a tangy-sweet housemade yuzu mayo, and a sprinkling of chopped chives. The vegan "Coney" is a made-from-scratch patty that combines maitake and oyster mushrooms with sweet potato, black beans, carrot, and a blend of seasonings, served with vegan cheese, lettuce, tomato, vegan cilantro aioli, "Coney sauce," and "magic" fried onions. All burgers are served on a vegan brioche bun fashioned after Japanese milk bread — squishy and buttery, like a brioche bao — an ideal delivery vehicle for these irresistible treats.

  • Crackers Casual Dining

78 Canal St., Miami Springs Doral

    786-518-3268

For down-home cooking at a family-owned spot, head to the quaint Miami Springs. Like the town in which it's located, Crackers Casual Dining is otherworldly. It's a cozy, comfortable place that feels far from the traffic-snarled Dolphin Expressway and even farther from the jockeying of South Beach. And to Jeff and Jo Mitnick, it's home, where two of their three daughters are on the floor waiting tables nightly. The pair opened the place two years ago after more than two decades of bartending and waiting tables. Jeff unabashedly proclaims he earned his kitchen chops by watching Food Network for hours, and it seems to have worked. His bacon jam, a sticky-salty amalgam that includes coffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, and apple-cider vinegar, has become a cult favorite on a menu that features everything from fried catfish to shrimp 'n' grits.

  • Doggi Style

    5701 Coral Way Westchester/West Miami

Unless you're a male bunny named Romeo, Don Juan, or Thumper, humping in public is a pretty crass act. That is, unless you're eating something utterly delicious. In that case, the impulse might happen unconsciously. That's why we suggest bringing your mom, boss, kindergarten teacher, or favorite nun to Doggi Style. It's a clean, little hot-dog stand nuzzled in the far corner of a gas station's parking lot at the intersection of Coral Way and Red Road. The place doles out not only authentic Venezuelan-style street food but also a few bites of nostalgia for the homeland. On the menu are hot dogs ($2.50), vegetarian hot dogs ($3.50), and choripanes served on crusty French bread. They are all done up with grilled onions, lettuce, and potato sticks. Burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches ($5.50) are smothered with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, corn, and potato sticks. Get them fully loaded (an additional $2) with a fried egg, bacon, and avocado on top, and you just might say, "Bow-wow." For an extra kick of awesome, sample of few of owner Laura Schloeter's homemade garlic, spicy mayo, and pineapple sauces. Best part: no grease seeping from your pores afterward. And be forewarned: This is not fast food; everything is made to order, so you might have to wait a bit. But it's worth it.

  • El Mago de las Fritas

5828 SW Eighth St. Westchester/West Miami

    305-266-8486

Sure, El Mago de las Fritas dispenses diner-like fare from its old-school cafeteria-esque dining room. But you're not here for just any dish. You're here for the Cuban hamburgers, AKA fritas. From the orange-hued beef chorizo patties to the almost-too-soft Cuban rolls and the topping of handmade potato sticks, El Mago's frita is one of the best iterations in the Magic City. You can order a basic frita, but seriously consider a double with cheese. Whatever you do, don't forget to add a fried egg on top. Look for the "Big Magic" — a Big Mac-like frita with a tostone as the middle bun. Most of the staff members don't speak English, but if you're uncomfortable ordering in Spanish, just point at what you want on the menu.
