  • Arbetter's Hot Dogs

    8747 SW 40th St. Westchester/West Miami

    305-207-0555

It's not necessarily the hot dogs themselves that are better at Arbetter's. Rather, these all-beef or pork-and-beef franks are ideal blank canvases for the three garnish combinations that solidified Arbetter's reputation when this family-run institution opened more than a half-century ago. The basic onion/relish dog is nicely tangy, and the sauerkraut/mustard dog, loaded with beautifully buttery, cooked-all-day-tender kraut, is even better. Along with the rich and flavorful but not overly hot all-meat chili topping from an old Arbetter family recipe, a garnish of diced raw onion adds that reassuring subliminal message that you're consuming a healthful greenish vegetable that certainly counteracts the menu's cholesterol count — so, hey, have another. For a taste of the 305, try a "Miami" dog with mustard, onion, cheese, tomato, and potato sticks. Or throw caution to the wind and order the "Zelda": a hot dog with "everything" on it.

  • Burr's Berry Farm

    12741 Southwest 216th St. Cutler Bay/Palmetto Bay

    305-251-0145

Drive up and say hello to Mary Burr, who's been selling strawberries, vegetables, milkshakes, and jams at the same location for more than 40 years. Here you'll find baskets of red, ripe strawberries ($8.50), cabbages, squashes the size of a small terriers, and homemade jams and jellies. Ever the entrepreneur, Mary and her crew also sell fresh orchids, honey, cut flowers, and potted herbs. If it grows in Redland, Mary sells it. Adjacent to the produce stand is a milkshake shack selling fresh strawberry milkshakes and sundaes ($4-$5). The place is busiest during weekends, filled with Miami families eager to show children a world apart from the suburban sprawl in which they live. Though other stands in the area also sell milkshakes, Mary's crew will tell you Burr's is the first and the best.

  • Doggi Style

    5701 Coral Way Westchester/West Miami

Unless you're a male bunny named Romeo, Don Juan, or Thumper, humping in public is a pretty crass act. That is, unless you're eating something utterly delicious. In that case, the impulse might happen unconsciously. That's why we suggest bringing your mom, boss, kindergarten teacher, or favorite nun to Doggi Style. It's a clean, little hot-dog stand nuzzled in the far corner of a gas station's parking lot at the intersection of Coral Way and Red Road. The place doles out not only authentic Venezuelan-style street food but also a few bites of nostalgia for the homeland. On the menu are hot dogs ($2.50), vegetarian hot dogs ($3.50), and choripanes served on crusty French bread. They are all done up with grilled onions, lettuce, and potato sticks. Burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches ($5.50) are smothered with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, corn, and potato sticks. Get them fully loaded (an additional $2) with a fried egg, bacon, and avocado on top, and you just might say, "Bow-wow." For an extra kick of awesome, sample of few of owner Laura Schloeter's homemade garlic, spicy mayo, and pineapple sauces. Best part: no grease seeping from your pores afterward. And be forewarned: This is not fast food; everything is made to order, so you might have to wait a bit. But it's worth it.

  • House of Dog

    456 W. 41st St., Miami Beach Mid/North Beach

    305-397-8733

Tucked between a salon and a chocolate factory in an ivy-covered is House of Dog, an all-Kosher eatery offering beer infused hot dogs with an endless array of toppings that made us question whether it is actually possible that it's all Kosher. It is. Dogs here are injected with beer, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and simmered in a beer bath. Upon ordering, a bun and the dogs are thrown on the grill and weighted, making for a hot and toasty bun with a bit of char and crispy dogs. Creations range from the Miami Heat -- topped with chili, sauteed onions, pickled jalapeno and wasabi mayo -- to the Boro Parker -- topped with a Jewish stew called cholent, a mix of meat, potatoes, beans and barley, kishka sausage, pastrami, cole slaw and barbecue sauce. So next time you have to shlep across the Julia Tuttle Causeway, find yourself hungry, and aren't in the mood for a $17 lobster peanut butter and jelly sandwich grab a Kosher dog and beer. Be sure to ask your bubby if you can bring her anything. Read our full review.

  • La Perrada de Edgar

6976 Collins Ave., Miami Beach Mid/North Beach

    305-866-4546

Despite the belief that they sprung from Yankee Stadium, hot dogs actually trace their lineage a little further back. And Columbians might have it over Sabrett's. Their "perros" are fatter, juicier, and OH, the toppings! Miami Beach's La Perrada De Edgar offers up a whole host of weineriffic options, from the Swiss dog (cheese sauce, bacon and corn) to the Edgar Special (mozzarella cheese, pineapple, peach, plum and whipped cream) - all around $5. And yes, Anthony Bourdain has eaten here, which makes it hallowed ground.

  • Los Perros

6828 NW 169th St. Miami Gardens

    305-823-6900

This Colombian hole in the wall realizes that in the middle of the night, when the alcohol has run dry or the munchies start to kick in, people don't mind paying South Beach prices for a hot dog, potatoes, and a coke, even if they are in West Dade. That's not to say that Los Perros doesn't earn its loot. It really is one hell of a hot dog. A Superperro, as they are called, comes with all the works, plus some Colombian condiments that bring new meaning to the word ingenuity. Pineapples on a foot-long -- who'd a thunk it? They also serve something called Salchipapas, which are fried potatoes and sausage covered in pink sauce (ketchup and mayonnaise), but what really drives the locals to this tiny place in an obscure shopping center is the music and the flat panel TVs that are always blaring good beats and hot bods. Like many of the joints around this part of town, the doors close when the action stops.
