  • InStyle Cupcakes

    9340 NW 13 St. Doral

    305-972-2680

The cupcake trend may feel a wee bit played out, but the truth is - cake is never going out of style. Most, sweet treats will always have a place in Miamian's hearts and minds. Enter InStyle cupcakes, a family owned endeavor serving up adorable two-bite dessert options. Even cuter than their everyday cupcakes (nutella, dulce de leche, carrot cake) are the holiday treats. Green velvet for St. Pat's; mini footballs for the Super Bowl; chocolate covered strawberry for Valentine's Day. And boozy cupcakes, too - cuba libre, Bailey's, Johnny Walker. Paired with the booze and sugar are top notch ingredients - organic eggs, milk and butter. So you can pig out and still feel good about your dairy choices.

  • A.C.'s Icees

2470 S. Bayshore Dr. Coconut Grove

    305-255-7648

In 1978, Allen Cohen said goodbye to Michigan winters and started over in Miami peddling lemonade. An avid runner, he set up shop in Coconut Grove's Kennedy Park, where athletes meet to train. "One of us would always have to do a grocery run to get beverages," he recalls of his decision to gather his savings and start A.C.'s Icees. "I feel very lucky - my office is a park." But don't let the laid-back attitude fool you; A.C. takes his frosted beverages very seriously. There are three flavors: lemonade, cherry/strawberry, and piña colada. All are made fresh every morning and cost only $2.50 a pop. Don't ask for the recipe - it's a secret. One senses a blend of fresh lemon and other fruit juices whipped to the perfect temperature and then placed in coolers inside his truck, ready for scooping. For many locals, the white truck with the yellow awning is a landmark. It is there year-round (except during hurricanes), with A.C. at the window. "On a busy Saturday, we can have up to 400 people," he says. That's a lot of frosted lemonade.

  • Doggi Style

    5701 Coral Way Westchester/West Miami

Unless you're a male bunny named Romeo, Don Juan, or Thumper, humping in public is a pretty crass act. That is, unless you're eating something utterly delicious. In that case, the impulse might happen unconsciously. That's why we suggest bringing your mom, boss, kindergarten teacher, or favorite nun to Doggi Style. It's a clean, little hot-dog stand nuzzled in the far corner of a gas station's parking lot at the intersection of Coral Way and Red Road. The place doles out not only authentic Venezuelan-style street food but also a few bites of nostalgia for the homeland. On the menu are hot dogs ($2.50), vegetarian hot dogs ($3.50), and choripanes served on crusty French bread. They are all done up with grilled onions, lettuce, and potato sticks. Burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches ($5.50) are smothered with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, corn, and potato sticks. Get them fully loaded (an additional $2) with a fried egg, bacon, and avocado on top, and you just might say, "Bow-wow." For an extra kick of awesome, sample of few of owner Laura Schloeter's homemade garlic, spicy mayo, and pineapple sauces. Best part: no grease seeping from your pores afterward. And be forewarned: This is not fast food; everything is made to order, so you might have to wait a bit. But it's worth it.

  • Latin Burger 2

    Various locations/Food truck Midtown/Wynwood/Design District

The brainchild of Jim Heins and Food Network host and cookbook author Ingrid Hoffman, this black and hot-pink truck roves the streets of Miami serving guilt-inducing street food. Its Latin macho burger ($6.25) - a double patty of chorizo, chuck, and sirloin blend topped with caramelized onions, jalapeños, and Oaxaca cheese - is the signature dish. If you're not in the mood for burgers, tacos might fit the bill. Choose from chicken tomatillo, pulled pork, or chicken mole ($2.95 each). Or even better, order the "3 amigos" tacos ($8) to sample all three. Recent menu additions include a pulled pork sandwich, a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich, and a hot dog. The truck usually makes its way to all corners of Miami-Dade and sometimes ventures to Broward. Follow the truck at twitter.com/latinburger for daily locations.
