  • Buttercream Cupcakes & Coffee

1411 Sunset Dr., South Miami Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-669-8181

While cupcake shops in Miami have become almost as pervasive as the proverbial Starbucks, there's still a big difference between good, bad and imminently superior. At South Miami's Buttercream Cupcakes and Coffee, their impossibly moist treats are some of the city's best. One of the few locales whose sweets are all full sized (versus the popular minis), they have a rotating selection ranging from seasonal pumpkin and rich Nutella ganache to fluffy chocolate coconut and nutty vanilla peanut butter. Plus, they have an extensive menu of coffee options made with their specialty blends: espressos, caramel macchiatos, frosted dulce de leches -- even chai tea chocolate lattes. All served up by counter help a cut above the average. So go ahead - treat yo' self.

For more than a decade, Yoyito's has been serving up pan con bistec, medianoches and croquetas to people who aren't about to settle for anything less than the best. In this neighborhood, you better know your Cuban food -- and they do.

  • Market at Edition

2901 Collins Ave., Miami Beach Mid/North Beach

    786-257-4500

Market at Edition features numerous stations where you can order without having to move an inch. Your server can bring you items from the raw bar, the cheese and charcuterie station, the dessert area, and the hot station featuring a pizza oven. Dining solo? Grab a counter seat. With a large group? There's plenty of room in this sleek, airy eatery replete with floor-to-ceiling windows. Unfortunately, the gourmet market items on display aren't for sale, but the pros at the various stations will gladly share their wisdom and let you sample some goodies. As a starter, the butternut soup with oyster mushrooms is spot on. It's velvety in texture and sharp in taste without being too rich. Bottom line: Eating at Market is tasty and tons of fun.

There are no venti white chocolate lattes or any drinks of that sort here. Nube's menu offers straightforward drinks — espresso, American, cappuccino, latte, frappe, and mocha — in eight-ounce and 12-ounce servings. All go for under $5. Nube also offers breakfast and lunch, supports local artists by featuring their work and hosting gallery night events, and has free Wi-Fi.

  • Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Cafe

    1421 S. Miami Ave. Brickell

    305-577-9811

By day, Segafredo is filled with people sipping lattes, reading newspapers, and playing backgammon. By night, the lights are dimmed, a DJ spins, and women wearing stilettos drink champagne cocktails. Sometime after dusk, a velvet rope and a valet parking attendant appear, and what was a cozy red, black, and gray coffee shop with upholstered couch clusters becomes an urbane bar and restaurant. The seven-page drink menu starts with the signature Italian coffees of this international chain, but is mostly filled with tropical cocktails, martinis, and wines and champagne by the bottle. Food choices are limited to small plates, salads, and panini. Try crisp thin-crust pizza pies served on wooden paddles, or one of the carpaccio plates of tuna, octopus, salmon or filet mignon. At night, sip a Treviso — an iced coffee drink with espresso, Baileys, and Kahlúa — the caffeine jolt will keep you up dancing. In the morning, come back for tea and apricot pastries.

  • Starbucks

200 Miracle Mile Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-443-6463

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Miami and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores.
