  • Bubble Cafe & Tea Lounge

    11402 NW 41st St., Suite 105 Doral

    305-722-0501

In a hidden corner of a far-flung strip mall, Manny Sulbaran serves a thoughtful, concise list of fare that won't send you away in a coma. Perhaps you know Sulbaran. He was once chef de cuisine at Michael Schwartz's Harry's Pizzeria in the Design District. It may seem odd to find him all the way out in Doral, but you'll be happy he is, especially when you get a glimpse of his burrata and panzanella salad ($7), as well as curried coconut rice ($6) with lentils, Virginia peanuts, raisins, scallions, and cilantro. Don't forget to grab a sweet bubble tea ($4 to $8) to go.

For more than a decade, Yoyito's has been serving up pan con bistec, medianoches and croquetas to people who aren't about to settle for anything less than the best. In this neighborhood, you better know your Cuban food -- and they do.

  • Free Spirits Pub

100 21st St., Miami Beach South Beach

    305-532-5399

A rather large British flag hangs proudly over the entrance and and sets the tone for this cozy watering hole. With a simple bar, small dance floor, easy entrance, and affordable booze, there's none of the attitude and snobbery particular to SoBe. And just like the Brits, the people at Free Spirits take their drinking seriously. The dirty martinis and Incredible Hulks are no joke. Old school punk tracks make you feel like you're in a dank UK club circa 1977. Thankfully the bar's relaxed atmosphere spares you the worry of getting kicked in the face by a stray mosher.

  • SpecialTEA Lounge and Café

    10766 Coral Way Tamiami

    305-554-8327

Oh, it's a hippie paradise in Tamiami! Mostly inhabited by students from nearby Florida International University, SpecialTEA boasts it is the "only tea house in Miami!" which is probably true. Miamians aren't known for being huge tea drinkers. The funny thing is that SpecialTEA's menu actually offers more coffee selections than tea beverages. But tree-hugging hippies feel right at home here, surrounded by the stink of patchouli. Of course, you're also bludgeoned repeatedly with words and phrases like "organic," "carbon-free," "fair trade," and "shade-grown." But that's the price you pay to look cool as you sip a tea latte ($4.00). SpecialTEA also serves paninis, such as the "olive you" ($5.30), a combination of spinach, mixed spring greens, mozzarella cheese, black olives, locally grown tomatoes, and homemade olive tapenade on whole wheat artisan bread. It should come as no surprise paninis can be made into a salad or wrap instead. Finish your meal with one of the sweets offered on the menu, such as an "apple baby," a warm, miniature caramel apple ($3.50). If you dig looking like the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland, SpecialTEA is the place for you. Also, like true hippies, they open early and close late, so make sure you have breakfast elsewhere.

  • Starbucks

200 Miracle Mile Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-443-6463

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Miami and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores.
