  • Bachour

    305-203-0552

Bachour, the namesake restaurant and bakery from Antonio Bachour, is an oasis of the Instagram-worthy pastries that made the Puerto Rican pastry chef a national sensation. The clean, industrial setting is the perfect backdrop for the brightly hued pastries, cakes, and other confections. Open for breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner, Bachour's all-day menu of salads, sandwiches, and hearty entrées earned the restaurant a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation in 2022. A meal can range from an egg sandwich or eggs Benedict to heartier fare, including a steak sandwich, lomo risotto, and fettuccine in a housemade pomodoro sauce. Be sure to grab a box of bonbons or macarons to take home. Since opening in Coral Gables in 2019, Bachour has added a location in Doral.

  • Bagel Bar East

1990 NE 123rd St. North Miami

    305-895-7022

Locals love to bemoan the lack of decent bagels in Miami. "New York has the best ones," they whine. "It's all about the water." Well, forget about moving back to Manhattan (or Queens or Brooklyn or Staten Island). Try Bagel Bar East, which is one of the few places in Miami that still hand-rolls, boils, and bakes its dough. These homemade, flavored beauties are so fresh and tasty that no toasting is necessary. In fact, if you hit Bagel Bar East at the right time (6:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.), the bagels will be piping-hot. This North Miami spot boasts more than 15 kinds, including plain, everything, poppy, onion, cinnamon-raisin, sesame, garlic, marble, seven-grain, and blueberry. Eat them plain or with a shmear of cream cheese (smoked salmon, chive, or veggie) or salad (tuna, chicken, egg, white fish, or chopped herring).

  • Bagel Emporium

    1238 S. Dixie Highway Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-666-0074

Located across from University Metrorail station (in the same plaza as T.G.I. Friday's and Pier 1 Imports), this little deli is perfect for a student or alum craving a shmear of Jewish soul food. Bagel Emporium bakes their soft, savory, donut-shaped treats daily (a dozen costs $9.95), and uses them for sandwiches that include hot corned beef ($9.50), pastrami ($8.50), Reuben ($9.95), and tongue ($10.50). If chopped liver ($7.95) isn't your thing, Philly cheese steaks and tuna melts (both $8.95) are also on the menu. Belgian waffles and buttermilk pancakes (both $5.95) sizzle on the griddle, but what's the fun in that when there's golden brown blintzes ($6.25) with sour cream and blueberry sauce, and stacked potato pancakes ($5.95) with apple sauce waiting to be gobbled up as well? For a larger meal, start with a potato knish ($3.95) and end with an indulgent plate of the signature nova Benedict (an egg Benedict with smoked salmon) for $9.95. Or opt for an open-face beef brisket (also $9.95) that comes with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy.

  • Bon-Bon Bakery

300 SW 17nth Ave. Little Havana

    305-642-4656

The facade of this bakery is rundown. The sign and storefront look as though they haven't been painted since they were first erected - sometime around the Mayflower landing. Despite all that, Bon Bon Bakery surprises you twofold. First, what bakery do you know that offers real Cuban pizza? A full pie, plain cheese or with ham, will cost you only $7.40. You can also purchase heaven by the slice for less than a buck. The second surprise is in the dough - Bon Bon's bread and crackers are delicious. Some say the place sells the best Cuban bread ($1.25) in Miami. You can pick up also bags of fresh, authentic Cuban crackers, made with either lard ($1.50 per bag) or salt ($1 per bag). If you're in the mood to soak up some Latin atmosphere, hit the counter and order a slice of pizza Cubana and a Malta.

  • Buenos Aires Bakery & Cafe

7134 Collins Ave., Miami Beach Mid/North Beach

    305-861-7887

This Argentine café is simply too good to have remained a secret. Generally speaking, if a bakery isn't crowded, it isn't worth visiting, so get in line at the always-buzzing Buenos Aires. Grab a basket and a number, and when your number is called, you tell the worker what you want. Your choices will derive from three brightly lit glass display cases of tempting baked goods. One is devoted to masas finas, or minipastries the size of petits fours. Another holds somewhat familiar cakes and desserts, such as ricotta cheesecake, tiramisu, fruit tarts, flan, bread pudding, and an over-the-top Imperial Russo cake layered with dulce de leche, strawberries, peaches, cream, napoleon dough, and meringue. Cakes are sold whole or by portion. And there's a case that contains numerous facturas, akin to Latin Danishes.

  • Buns & Buns

5478 Sunset Dr., South Miami Coral Gables/S. Miami

    786-216-7754

Buns & Buns wants to bring good bread back. Owner Alexandre Zibi and chef Reuven Sugarman spent three weeks traveling the world in early 2013 in search of recipes and techniques from the globe's greatest cooking cultures. They brought back steamed buns from China, naan from India and the Middle East, and brioche from France. At their South Miami fast-casual spot, every dish -- from slow-cooked brisket to lamb ribs to chili-marinated shrimp -- is accompanied by a soft, chewy helping of bread. "Rip it, dip it, or stuff it" is the motto here, and the choice, along with a handful of heavy yet satisfying options, is all yours.Read our full review.

  • Buttercream Cupcakes & Coffee

1411 Sunset Dr., South Miami Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-669-8181

While cupcake shops in Miami have become almost as pervasive as the proverbial Starbucks, there's still a big difference between good, bad and imminently superior. At South Miami's Buttercream Cupcakes and Coffee, their impossibly moist treats are some of the city's best. One of the few locales whose sweets are all full sized (versus the popular minis), they have a rotating selection ranging from seasonal pumpkin and rich Nutella ganache to fluffy chocolate coconut and nutty vanilla peanut butter. Plus, they have an extensive menu of coffee options made with their specialty blends: espressos, caramel macchiatos, frosted dulce de leches -- even chai tea chocolate lattes. All served up by counter help a cut above the average. So go ahead - treat yo' self.

  • Cafe Bonjour

    6222 S. Dixie Highway Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-661-4714

Imagine an afternoon stroll down the Champs-Élysées -- breezes blowing, people laughing, blue skies stretched above. You stop at a small sidewalk café, take a seat and order a French onion soup and café latte. Time slows. Your soup arrives, simmering, your coffee dense and hot. While Cafe Bonjour may not look like the scene above, it will taste like it. Set in a strip mall in South Miami, many fresh, European-inspired eats fill their menu, including chicken apple salads, steak frites, almond croissants. The cafe's daily specials are reminiscent of any European eatery. So stop by, taste a tart and imagine it's springtime in Paris. Your food will fool you, even if the scenery can't.

Cases at this Argentine bakery contain a vast variety of butter-based cookies as well as fruit tarts, napoleons, strawberry cheesecakes, and mini-pecan pies. Then there are the turnovers tunneled with sweet cheese, fruit, and dulce de leche and trays of facturas atop the counters. The Argentine-style empanada, with its juicy, full-flavored chicken and sautéed onion filling, ranks among the best in Miami. Pork and beef empanadas are available as well, and so are those modeled on other Latin countries, such as a blintz-like Chilean version with soft, pale dough draped around sweet white cheese, and a Venezuelan empanada packed with seasoned beef that is larger and much more pleasing. There's coffee, counter space, and a comfortable atmosphere conducive to ruminating on the past, here or in Buenos Aires.

  • Che Tano

9564 SW 137th Ave. South Dade

    305-395-7436

Argentines are recognized for their meat. In fact, you can find a parrillada serving loads of churrasco, sausage, and ribs in almost any Miami neighborhood. Argentine bakeries are not as ubiquitous, although they should be. Somehow, while the rest of the Hispanic world never thought to venture past chicken and beef empanada fillings, Argentines boldly went where no Latino had gone before. Che Tano celebrates this diversity by offering about 18 kinds of empanadas — double that if you count the fact that you can choose either baked or fried. Think of all the wonderful options: corn, cheese and onions, tuna, and ham, cheese, and hardboiled egg — the list seems endless. While variety might be the spice of life, let's not forget there is still value in tradition. After all is said and done, the beef empanadas (baked and fried) at Che Tano are the stuff that dreams are made of.

  • Chocolate Fashion

248 Andalusia Ave. Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-461-3200

True Francophiles swoon when the words "Chocolate Fashion" are uttered. Just one look into the lighted pastry case is enough to make them sob. There are glazed super-size fruit tarts, delicate cakes and cookies as big as a baby's face, and shot glasses of chocolate mousse topped with chocolate macaroons. Had a bad day? Your sorrows will be forgotten after you try a slice of strawberry soufflé cake or devour a guava-cheese muffin. But there's more to this spot than just the confections. It bills itself as a restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, and a bakery, patisserie, chocolaterie, and confiserie (candy store). But "market" should also be added, as they carry everything from Lavazzo coffee to French sardines and rose petal jelly. The menu also offers breakfast items like delicate brioche French toast for $6.95 or flaky quiche for only $3.95. Lunch can include hearty sandwiches that only cost $8.75 or salads ranging from $8.25 to $9.25. Check the website daily for lunch specials, which tend to include one meat dish (like a lamb stew for $12.95), and a fish or low-carb option for about the same price. If your meal doesn't come with bread, ask for it and thank us later. Blessedly the poor service encountered at many local French joints is absent here. You'll get your meal without a hint of snobbery. The décor is forgettable. As for the eatery's name, well, who knows what it means. And who cares? You didn't come here to talk; you came here to eat.

  • Crumb on Parchment

3930 NE Second Ave. Midtown/Wynwood/Design District

    305-572-9444

TEMPORARILY CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS. Step into the soaring atrium at 3930 NE Second Ave. in the Design District, and the first thing you notice is the sunlight. The second thing you sense is the smell of delicious baked goods. The source: Crumb on Parchment. The restaurant has a steady following thanks to its tasty café cuisine and reasonable prices. Modestly sized sandwiches, soups, and salads compose the bulk of the menu, but the low cost makes mixing and matching affordable. The real treat, however, is the chocolate brownies. According to the menu, they are made with "100 percent butter and lots of love." They sure taste like it. Read our full review of Crumb on Parchment.

  • Delices de France French Bakery

14453 S. Dixie Highway, Palmetto Bay East Kendall/Pinecrest

    305-256-9700

A storefront off South Dixie Highway near a McDonald's is not where you'd expect to get a taste of Paris. But Delices de France does its best to prove that location isn't everything. In fact, with a smattering of tables overlooking a blacktop parking lot, the bakery confidently announces that when you indulge in its baked goods, you will be transported to a French boulangerie on the Champs-lysées. The moment you walk in - which can be tricky considering there is often a line out the door - you are overcome with the smell of fresh pastries. The croissants are buttery, with flaky exteriors concealing a doughy but aerated interior. Try the almond croissant ($2.50), filled with a homemade almond cream and sprinkled with powdered sugar. The ham and cheese croissant ($2.50) can easily double as a lunch sandwich. There's also prosciutto and fresh mozzarella on Ciabatta bread prepared with a secret Mediterranean herb spice ($7.50), and the "Parisian kiss," served on a baguette with Genoa salami, Brie, lettuce, and tomato ($6.95). But you'd be remiss if you left Delices without indulging in the chocolate mousse ($2.95 per individual serving) or the passion fruit and chocolate mousse cake ($2.95 per individual serving). On weekends, fresh fruit tarts ($4.25 for an individual size or $25 for an eight-inch tart) are available. On your way out the door, grab a warm baguette ($2); they're baked three times a day.
