  • Artistic Vibes

    8846-B SW 129th Terrace East Kendall/Pinecrest

    786-505-8423

Draw up a list of the many possible places that a hub for newborn creatives might be tucked in Miami-Dade, and a cluster of warehouses stuck behind an Outback Steakhouse in Kendall would presumably be pretty close to the bottom. But get over the odd location and there's no denying the truth: Artistic Vibes brims with life and burbles with creative juices. Founded in 2010, the artist collective in a renovated warehouse gives a platform to a variety of performance art productions, from live music and poetry to stand-up comedy and theater. Artistic Vibes' atmosphere is homey and fun, a unique combination amid the typical stiff gallery or dark bar performance backdrop. Audience members can grab beer, popcorn, and other refreshments from the cash bar and settle into a sofa to watch the show. It's kind of like being in a dirty-humored, pothead-friendly version of your grandparents' living room.

  • Main Street Playhouse

This little troupe has been plugging away in various incarnations since 1974, staging more than 150 plays and musicals. While short on resources, they're tall on talent, and bring impressive presence to the performances they stage in their little black box. • Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts

    1300 Biscayne Blvd. Downtown/Overtown

    305-949-6722

The Adrienne Arsht Center might be Miami's most beautiful building. Any way you slice it, the modern tribute to glass and steel is a bold reminder of our city's commitment to the arts. Most major shows make a stop at the Arsht Center, from Les Misérables to the Boston Pops. The largest performing arts center in Florida, this 5,000-seat apex is comfy indeed. There's a concert hall, a theater in the round, an outdoor performance space and even a swanky eatery on site. Sure, a visit to the Arsht ain't cheap — you'll pay a pretty penny for drinks and snacks and probably tickets (although deals do abound) — but it's so worth it to nourish your starving intellect, now isn't it?

  • Broward Center for the Performing Arts

201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale

    954-462-0222

South Florida has tons of venues for theater and live music: for the most part, they’re run of the mill. Not the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Situated directly on the beautifully landscaped riverwalk portion of the New River, the Broward Center screams elegance before you even enter the door. And then you head in: high ceilings, fancy lighting, and newly renovated theaters. The decor will definitely help you to--at least, somewhat--justify the high ticket prices.
