  • Doggi's Arepa Bar

1246 Coral Way Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-999-7498

At an arepa bar, it's hard to think beyond the goodness of those crisp, off-white corn cakes. But at Doggi's, the fluffy cachapas are another Venezuelan delicacy worthy of attention. It's a semisweet, taxicab-yellow corn pancake filled with queso de mano and sometimes shredded beef. The texture of the kernels comes through in certain bites, and some areas of the pancake are topped with deep-golden spots for a touch of crunch and extra flavor. Sure, the place proffers large, tasty arepas with fillings ranging from Guayanés cheese to pabellón criollo, but the sweet cachapa just might capture your heart and taste buds.

  • GastroPod Mobile Gourmet

    Various Locations/Food Truck Midtown/Wynwood/Design District

Jeremiah Bullfrog ain't no Mister Softee. He ain't no Dairy Queen either. Yet his GastroPod foodmobile, a shiny silver converted '62 Airstream trailer, attracts streams of enthusiastic followers wherever it goes — as if he's the Pied Piper of foodies or something. He ain't that either, but the Miami native is a damn seriously talented chef; locals still talk about his celebrated Bullfrog Eatz in Wynwood. But now you can relish his outrageously tasty fare at single-digit prices. To wit: The "old dirty dog" — a smoked short-rib hot dog plunked into a potato bun and topped with sweet/spicy slaw — costs five bucks. The bánh mì taco — with oxtail, trotters, country pâté, and pickled radishes — is $3. A sloppy José with brisket and "curry in a hurry" (vegan curry with rice) are the high-end items at $7 and $8 apiece. Heck, the GastroPod even has an immersion circulator for sous vide cooking. The silver bullet has been known to park around Biscayne Boulevard and 18th Street, but your best bet is to tune in to Twitter to find out where this roving gourmet kitchen will strike next.

  • Latin Burger 2

    Various locations/Food truck Midtown/Wynwood/Design District

The brainchild of Jim Heins and Food Network host and cookbook author Ingrid Hoffman, this black and hot-pink truck roves the streets of Miami serving guilt-inducing street food. Its Latin macho burger ($6.25) - a double patty of chorizo, chuck, and sirloin blend topped with caramelized onions, jalapeños, and Oaxaca cheese - is the signature dish. If you're not in the mood for burgers, tacos might fit the bill. Choose from chicken tomatillo, pulled pork, or chicken mole ($2.95 each). Or even better, order the "3 amigos" tacos ($8) to sample all three. Recent menu additions include a pulled pork sandwich, a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich, and a hot dog. The truck usually makes its way to all corners of Miami-Dade and sometimes ventures to Broward. Follow the truck at twitter.com/latinburger for daily locations.
