  • Brasserie Azur

3252 NE First Ave. Midtown/Wynwood/Design District

    786-800-9993

Midtown's Brasserie Azur is incredibly good-looking. But rest assured you won't find any of the pomp associated with its South Beach sister party spot, Villa Azur. Sure, both eateries serve French fare with an Italian twist by executive chef Edwin Mallet, but Brasserie Azur is more casual and affordable. Here, you'll find plenty of wines by the glass for $8 or less and bottles for under $50, which is rare in Miami. Food-wise, there's a well-stocked raw bar and an impressive selection of charcuterie and cheeses, as well as five rotisserie-chicken preparations. Choosing among a plain farm-raised chicken, one marinated in truffles, and one flavored with lemon and rosemary isn't easy. Chef Mallet says they slow-roast the bird until the meat is juicy and tender. And indeed, the protein boasts both of those qualities in addition to being expertly seasoned. However, Brasserie Azur will need more than good looks and topnotch rotisserie chicken to fill all of its cushioned seats. Superior service and more refined cookery are what this eatery requires to leave its mark on Miami's ever-improving dining scene.

  • Mojo Donuts & Fried Chicken

    8870 SW 40th St., #13 Westchester/West Miami

    305-223-6656

Mojo's success can be credited to the doughnuts, which have made the shop a raging success since it debuted in December 2016. More than three dozen varieties are lightly fried and then garnished with sprinkles, creams, or chocolate. Flavors include Nutella bacon, banana cream pie, and salted caramel cheesecake. Don't leave without a bite of the chicken brûlée sandwich — a hand-rolled, caramelized bun stuffed with a tender piece of fried chicken and cheddar cheese.

  • Pack Supermarket and Cafeteria

8235 NE Second Ave. Miami Shores/Biscayne Park

    305-757-4777

Over the past three decades, Little Haiti's Pack Supermarket has become a kind community for the surrounding neighborhood, all thanks to fried chicken. During lunch, dozens of cops, executives, and working stiffs line up for the stuff. Sunday mornings, crowds of churchgoers mingle with bouncers from downtown clubs and spandex-clad cyclists while awaiting fragrant Styrofoam containers filled with juicy poultry and the slightly sweet ovals of the smashed-and-fried plantains Haitians term "banane." It's a meal that could be breakfast or dinner. Pack's recipe is a spinoff of the classic that calls for skin-on legs to be marinated in a spicy, acidic amalgam of vinegar, lime juice, garlic, onion, and hot peppers such as Scotch bonnets.

  • The Sarsaparilla Club

1 18th St., Miami Beach South Beach

    305-341-1400

There are many places in Miami that serve Chinese dim sum, but only one restaurant offers an American version: the Sarsaparilla Club at the Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach. During the appetizer portion of the meal, apron-clad waiters approach each table with pushcarts containing an assortment of American-inspired bites and small plates. The chefs behind the rustic poolside restaurant are power couple Janine Booth and Jeff McInnis. They met on the line at Gigi's in midtown Miami and were reunited at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar in 2011. In 2013, they opened a Root & Bone in Manhattan and earned rave reviews for their elevated Southern fare. The Sarsaparilla Club's dim sum selection contains eight or so items that change frequently. Try the sweet corn simmered in a corn stock and drizzled with a cornbread butter. Each order features half an ear of corn topped with lemon popcorn and cornbread crumbles. The citrus notes of the popcorn — though slightly odd at first — balance out the sweetness of this rich and thoroughly original dish.Read our full review.
