  • Hyde Beach

1701 Collins Ave., Miami Beach South Beach

    305-455-2990

Time for some real talk: It's damn difficult to mess up a poolside bar in Miami. You're beside a pool. There's a bar. You purchase cocktails, dip your feet into the water, and basically live the American dream as you sip your way to the bottom. How hard can this be, people? Yet an astonishing number of Miami hotels have conspired to ruin this simplest of good things with eye-poppingly overpriced drinks, shoddy service, and pools that are either inaccessibly hip or packed to the gills with sunburned out-of-towners. So props to Hyde Beach for getting it so right. Inside, the bar is decked out like a '70s Brady Bunch rec room, but outside there's 8,000 square feet of pool and beach fun. There are pitchers of mango mojitos ($80) and cucumber watermelon margaritas ($18), or for true backyard ballers, bottles of Moët & Chandon Ice ($475) and vases of sangria made tableside ($200).

  • Azucar Nightclub

    2301 SW 32nd Ave. Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-443-7657

Who says gay bars are only on the beach? Twist ain't the only game in town, just ask the regulars at Azúcar. This gay bar and drag palace is all kinds of flamboyant. Wednesday is Jock Night, featuring hottie hunks baring it in briefs; Thursday's all about the glam with Drag Wars; and Saturday nights mean free house drinks till 11:30. Expect to dance your saucy little heart out. And with regular drink specials like $2 Bud Lights and $4 Coronas, a night of flaming fun doesn't have to break the bank.

  • Bardot

    3456 N. Miami Ave. Midtown/Wynwood/Design District

    305-576-7750

Sick of social media? Bardot has a parking-lot entrance, no sign, and a zero-photography policy. A long bar dominates one side of the single open space, while Moroccan-cool lounge furniture, a pool table, and a stage take up the other half. Topnotch local bands, musicians, and DJs play regularly, and late-night parties make this spot prime for after hours.

  • Basement Miami

2901 Collins Ave., Miami Beach Mid/North Beach

    786-257-4548

The Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" and John Travolta in flared pants -- that's what comes to mind when you hear the word "disco." But even though platform shoes and sequined jumpsuits were the craze in the '70s, Basement Miami has a different take on discotheque culture. Owned by Ian Schrager -- the cofounder of quintessential disco club Studio 54 -- and Mariott International, Basement opened during Art Basel Miami Beach 2014, when it hosted some of the season's best arty parties with the likes of James Murphy, Horse Meat Disco, and Louie Vega. Located on the ground floor of the newly reincarnated 1955 Seville Hotel, now known as the Miami Beach Edition, Basement avoids velvet ropes and VIP areas. It's just a simple nightclub and lounge area -- well, a bowling alley and ice-skating rink too. Oh, and flashing lights designed by Patrick Woodroffe, the genius who has illuminated concerts for Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2012 London Olympics.

  • Booby Trap Doral

    5325 NW 77th Ave. Doral

    305-477-2176

If you've got some time to kill, you're hungry, you like naked women, and you have $2 in your pocket, Booby Trap is the place to go. Two bucks is the cover charge from noon to 5 p.m., and there is a free lunch menu, plus two-for-one drinks. And, oh yes, there are strippers. It's a veritable naked United Nations, with women from all over South America and Europe gracing the poles. Firemen, police officers, and ladies get in free, and the club has theme parties on the first Wednesday of every month.
  • Cafe Iguana Pines

    8358 Pines Blvd. Hollywood

    954-433-8787

Dining here would seem to be a completely superfluous activity (just try to find a menu online) compared to the real draw of the place: Ten bars with nearly 100 televisions; a "Media Room" beaming eight satellite sports stations at once; big-party weekend blowouts with VIP rooms, $250 bottles of liquor and a $10 cover charge just to get in after 9 p.m. This place draws one of the most ethnically-mixed crowds around — they have Latina nights, Caribbean DJs, and also do bar mitzvahs. Yes, there is a dress code.

  • Club Space

    34 NE 11th St. Downtown/Overtown

    786-616-6742

Back in 2013, Club Space founder Louis Puig sold his stake in the crown jewel of Miami's nightlife scene after 13 years of pushing the dance music mecca into the hearts and minds of booty-shaking people worldwide. Now that new ownership has taken over Space, the best thing they've done so far is leave well enough alone. Except for some minor upgrades here and there, you'll encounter the same ol' familiar venue. This is still the place to go for people who don't want the party to ever end, dancing on the downtown terrace well past sunrise.

  • Do Not Sit on the Furniture

423 16th St., Miami Beach South Beach

    510-550-5067

The philosophy of this beat-freak hangout is right there in the name: If you're sitting, you're not dancing, and dancing is the whole point. That's why revelers looking for a grittier party experience in SoBe have been flocking to the latest dimly lit dancehall in town, affectionately referred to as Don't Sit. House heads have come to love the no-nonsense atmosphere in a space that's both charming and imaginative without being frilly and over-the-top. All right, the giant carnival ride light-up wheel dangling from the ceiling might be a lot, but when it's not blinking, you can hardly see the person grooving in front of you. The club has churned out great theme nights such as Rewind — a classic-house party — and killer acts like Francis Harris and DJ Behrouz. Combined with an underground feel that even Miami's hard-to-please fans can appreciate, there's little danger of anyone disobeying this club's driving mantra. Who would want to prop his feet up on the sofa anyway with beats like these rocking his brain?
